WAHM Multitasking: What Can I Do While I Pee?

Oh dear…I have come to the realisation that I might multitask too much.  Being a wahm that writes from home for a living and who deals with the kids and the house and darling husband, I’ve found ways to do many things concurrently.

Because technology allows me to run multiple tasks at a time on my computer, there are rarely moments when I have less than 17 Firefox tabs open at a time.  Usually I have two different multi-tab FF sessions and several Word docs, Excel sheets and other assorted  things happening on my pc.

I frequently :

  • talk on the phone while working,
  • talk to people in my house while working;
  • and have various things happening that need me intermittently such as laundry or something cooking.

I’ve gotten to a point where Idon’t think I know how to relax any more.

I organise articles in my head while I do the dishes, I read and write while watching TV, exercise while watching TV or (even while working at times) and think I am losing my ability to do mono tasking because if I’m doing one thing, I’m automatically looking for something else to do while I do it. While I read stories to my little one, I’m doing Pilates on his bedroom floor for heaven’s sake!

Is this good, or is it bad? I guess it’s a bit of both.

It’s wonderful (and essential) being able to walk and chew gum at the same time but how do I learn to relax at least a little? I’m finding that I get impatient when people pause. I often know what they’re going to say next so I want them to hurry up so I can move on because I’m just so darn busy.

On Friday I logged into Facebook (probably while waiting for a download to finish or something) and saw people reveling in the fact that it was Friday and I missed that old TGIF feeling. I generally work most weekends so Friday is just another day. I remarked about it on my other Facebook account (I have two. One for work and one for family because clients don’t need to see pictures of me being force fed Jell-O shooters on my annual girls’ weekend) and other wahms felt similarly.  One friend suggested Friday should be for fun projects which sounded like a great way to keep the TG in TGIF.  Work/life balance is important and while I’ll never work at a snail’s pace, I do need to learn to slow down just a little.

Ciao for now. It’s time to go do bedtime stories / the Pilates 100.
