Farewell Sweet Summer: Is Balance Within My Grasp?

‘Tis labour day today and tomorrow The Boy starts grade 7. Last night he gave me a piggy back without breaking a sweat. That’s how big my child is getting! Shocking!

And…the Wee Boy starts Junior Kindergarten. Sniff…

This little person has been attached to my hip since he was born (of course). Because we had such a scary pregnancy, I never let him far out of my sight very often so created a bit of a Mommy magnet. I have a little boy now who is very apprehensive about being without me. He’d love school if Mommy could experience it with him. He has a great personality and I know he’ll love it but the start of the journey might be a bit bumpy.

Sadly, I’ve decided it’s going to minimize his stress if I take a back seat and don’t participate in this milestone for a few weeks so Daddy is going to put him on the bus tomorrow. I’ll pick him up each day after school but for the first week or two, Daddy will have to do the morning routine otherwise we predict he’d grab ahold of me and scream for dear life.

Thankfully, The Boy is on his little brother’s bus and this eases my mind tremendously about my little one getting where he needs to go. The school has a very organized system for keeping little ones where they need to go with bus buddies and a well organized system. If The Boy wasn’t there, I don’t know how I’d cope.  When The Boy was 5 and starting Senior Kindergarten (we didn’t have Junior where we lived. Plus he was almost 6 because his birthday is in January) we drove him 15 minutes each way for 4 months before putting him on the bus because we were that nervous about it.  I’m so glad he’s on the bus to take care of his wee brother and hope he doesn’t mind because he’s totally putting Momma at ease.

So, the writer’s life is going to hopefully get a little less chaotic with an alternating 2 days one week and 3 days another week to work uninterrupted from 8:10 until 4:pm. Does this mean I’ll finally have more free time in evenings and weekends? I hope! Does this mean I may get to achieve the elusive ‘balance’ I crave?

It might mean I just do more work in the first bit of time because I’m like that and business is booming but hopefully things will go well and Wee boy will make friends and dazzle teachers with his brilliance. Today, I’m a bit sad and a bit elated for him at the same time. Hopefully he surprises me and goes willingly.

  1. I know the feeling, Dana. School starts for my daughter tomorrow, too. She’s mostly looking forward to it (helped by a new schoolbag, water bottle, and various accessories). And I’m looking forward to a more normal workday. I’ll miss her, though.

  2. Thanks, Sharon.

Yes, new “stuff” is definitely helping a little. We’ve gotten spiderman outdoor shoes, Ninja turtle indoor shoes, a Hulk backpack/lunchbag/pencil case and some new clothes. My child is a walking logo board. HAHA
