Plurk or Twitter?

Mini blogging tools are great for self promotion and for a water cooler environment that can definitely give WAH people a great sanity break.  I said recently that I’d talk about Plurk but completely forgot. I really need to stop writing in my blog that I’ll be back later to discuss another subject because several times it just hasn’t happened.

My review of Plurk

At first I thought it was simply a Twitter rip-off and I wasn’t interested. But then after many disappointing tries to visit Twitter which has had a lot of hiccups with technical problems, I gave Plurk a chance. Each time I visited I got confused and disoriented until I started to spend more time there and then I realised how different it was.

With Plurk, you can follow conversations and easily see what you’ve missed and there are several fun little extras you don’t get with Twitter. I am loving it. It feels more personal and much less like I’m just another tweet in a big crowd.

Danger: Productivity Vacuum!

I have to be careful not to spend too much time on social media because it can be a productivity drainer and Hoover the day away but it is definitely worth spending a few minutes a day there for some laughs, some ideas, some reading material and camaraderie. There are lots of other freelance writing WAHMs there, which adds to the great environment.

I haven’t given up on Twitter but I am dividing my time between the two sites instead of spending as much time on them individually as I had with Twitter during the honeymoon phase.  Productivity can be hard to come by so if you’re staying away from micro blogging tools for fear of throwing off your schedule you could give yourself a coffee break period each day to spend there. You might be surprised at the fact that it can sometimes increase your productivity due to ideas, group writing projects, writing prompts and can bring you new traffic to your websites as well.
