It’s Amazing What A Power Failure And Cheesecake Can Do For Perspective

When you buy cheesecake, you expect it to be baked and you expect it to have a graham cracker crust. I got a no-bake whipped concoction with a plain old crust. Rip off. That’s a digression on my part though, on to the reason for today’s post.

I got a lot accomplished work-wise today and I accomplished a small task that created some domestic bliss in me. Vast bliss, really.

It’s gonna be a crazed week so I don’t know if there will be any more bliss (or clean cutlery without washing on demand) this week. Somehow I’ve saddled myself with 14 projects. Four are being outsourced to trusty team members but I will be required to edit/proofread and communicate with the clients on those and this isn’t counting any rushes or urgencies this week. I guess those closets on my to-do won’t get done this week.

But, today I totally organised my coffee and spice cupboard. I pulled everything out, cleaned the cupboards with cleaner and put things away. I even turfed some stuff. it looks so clean and organised. The sweet spices are together the frequently used spices are together and the lesser used guys are tucked in back. All the oils are in one spot and all the coffee and tea stuff is on a shelf above the coffee cups. There’s room leftover and it looks beautiful. Every time I walk by the kitchen I open those two doors and feel all glowy admiring the much needed spruce up.

How did I manage this domestic stuff today amid my writerly mahyem?

We had a power failure due to a thunder storm. I pushed it (as usual) and didn’t shut down until everything just turned off. I said a little silent prayer that nothing would be irrepairable and thankfully it wasn’t. For twenty minutes I just cleaned and organised and was ever so happy with my results. So for the rest of the week although I’m crazy busy I shall be vowing to be doing 30 minute mini chores once a day to try to get more of that bliss. I could be onto something here. Then again, I may also need to tell dh to turn down the main power breaker so that I can’t procrastinate.

Back to the cheesecake. It really wasn’t bad when I tasted it. Today’s workday looked mental but I got through it ok. This week will go ok too. The power failure made me cuss under my breath but it really didn’t hurt my work productivity and I got something done that gave me a bit of joy. Life is like that sometimes.

  1. Oh! I’ve had power failures in the midst of deadlines before. I know I shouldn’t wait until the last minute, just in case… but sometimes it happens and unfortunately, so do power failures.

I did some organizing too - it feels so good, doesn’t it?

  2. Oh yes, Katherine…doesn’t the result of procrastination equal to everything going haywire? That’s why last week I said here on a post that procrastination really is self-punishment because we put these huge burdens on ourselves. I’m trying to be guilty of it much less often! :)

  3. Don’t you just love the feeling after organizing your closets and cupboards? It makes you feel so great!!!

This week, I’ve started cleaning downstairs first thing every morning. (We’ve got lots of boxes and junk down there from moving last year. Ugh!) Anyway, I feel on top of the world when I’m done and I’m so much more productive the rest of the day. I’ve done this in the past as well and always have great results with my productivity while working online.
